Architecture in Helsinki

One of my old time favourites was opening the Melbourne Music Week last month with a new stage at Queen Victoria Markets. Featuring a ton of fancy lights, and bar and restaurant designed by my old colleague Christina Bozsan, the vibe was excellent.

Architecture in Helsinki performed great, with heaps of energy to open and close and some of the slowest songs tucked in the middle.

Such a recommended event and so refreshing to go to a new venue right in the city where the fresh air flows while the band plays.

The Beautiful Girls

If I had to think of a band that really captures Sydney Eastern Beaches essence, that would be the Beautiful Girls. They have been around for  nearly 12 years, featured often in Triple J Radio and also toured in Europe ad US multiple times during their career.

Matt Keegan, lead saxophonist from Sydney jazz band Matt Keegan Trio, was one of the few extremely talented musicians on stage that night. They put on a great show, and not only managed to fill up the whole venue, but also to keep the audience dancing all night long.

Mia Dyson

Last night I had the pleasure to shoot Mebourne icon Mia Dyson in my first time at Howler in Brunswick. As you can remember, I took photos of a similar show last year at the Thornbury Theatre, and I was pleased to see a much more polished performance, great guitar solos, breathtaking sound and of course, the amazing good ol’ Tim Keegan on the bass guitar.

It doesn’t get much better than this.

Diego el Cigala in Melbourne

Last Friday night we had the extraordinary pleasure of seeing Diego el Cigala at the Arts Centre in Melbourne. Accompanied by a very talented band of Latino jazz musicians, the Spanish ‘Cantaor’ expressed his thankfulness all the Melbournites –a large proportion with Hispanic background- that came to see him in Melbourne after his first appearance 20 years ago, in a nearly sold-out show.

The 3 times Grammy-winning singer enjoyed himself on his own performance and with a smile, spread his good humour amongst the audience. His songs, sentimental and romantic at times, cheeky and playful at others, combined the tragedy of traditional flamenco and the joy of Latino rhythms.

Each individual musician performed extraordinarily, with instrumental solo passages that were absolutely breathtaking, to the point that the clamorous audience asked for an encore and stood up for a couple of minutes to applaud the quartet at the end of the show

I can only thank Diego for putting on a first-class show and bringing us this ancient and modern art from so, so far away and to treat us with an unforgettable Melbourne soiree.

Ben Watt @ the NGV

Interesting crowd that gathered last Friday night at the NGV, a mixed a secret fans of Everything But the Girl, some curious hipsters and a lots of grown-ups.

Ben, who also came down to Melbourne, for the writer’s festival delivered a great performance, swapped guitars with keyboards and scattered it all with anecdotes his childhood in Britain. A truly great artist for another great night of this year’s NGV music program.
